John Deere 6R Lights: Work Lights, Headlights and LED Upgrades
In this guide
John Deere 6R lights are the headlamps and corner lamps in the bonnet, the work lights on the front and rear of the cab roof, the side (belt line) work lamps, the roof beacons and the rear lamps. Exactly which lamps your tractor has depends on its model year, its roof type (Standard or Panorama) and the lighting package it left the factory with. Every 6R runs a 12V system.
This guide sits under our main John Deere tractor lights guide. It covers the 6R generations from 2011 to the latest Model Year 2027 tractors, where each lamp sits, what tends to get broken, and how to buy the right replacement or LED upgrade first time.
Which 6R Generation Do You Have?
The 6R range has changed several times since launch, and John Deere’s own parts listings split 6R lighting by model year (MY). The model year is the key fact to have before you order anything.
| Generation | Model years | Example model names | Lighting notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 6R | MY2012 to MY2014 (launched 2011) | 6150R, 6170R, 6210R | Halogen as standard on many tractors, LED work lamps on higher specs |
| Second update | MY2015 to MY2021 | 6155R, 6195R, 6215R, 6250R | Halogen or LED depending on lighting package |
| New naming | MY2022 onwards | 6R 145, 6R 155, 6R 185, 6R 250 | LED packages widely specified |
| MY2027 Large and Xtra Large Frame | MY2027 (announced June 2026) | 6R 180, 6R 200, 6R 220, 6R 240, 6R 230, 6R 260 | CommandView 4 cab with redesigned rear window and pillars; check lamp fitment with the PIN |
The quickest tell is the badge. A tractor badged with the numbers before the R (6155R) is an MY2021 or earlier machine. A tractor badged 6R followed by the power figure (6R 155) is MY2022 or later. Within each era the range covers small, medium, large and extra large frame tractors, so a 6R 145 and a 6R 250 can carry different lamps even in the same year.
Standard Roof or Panorama Roof
John Deere builds the 6R cab with either a Standard roof or a Panorama roof (the version with a clear roof panel for loader work). The front roof work lamps are different between the two. John Deere’s own LED kits list oval lamps for the Standard roof and round adjustable lamps for the Panorama roof, so check which roof you have before ordering front roof lamps.
Where the Lights Sit on a John Deere 6R
A 6R has 5 main lighting zones. The number of lamps in each zone depends on the lighting package, but the positions are consistent across the range.
| Zone | What sits there | Typical job |
|---|---|---|
| Bonnet (hood) | Low beam and high beam headlamps, plus corner lights | Road lighting and close front work |
| Front cab roof | A pair of work lights, fixed or adjustable | Field ahead, front linkage, loader |
| Side and belt line | Side work lamps at handrail or belt line height, plus clearance and indicator lamps | Wheels, ground beside the tractor, steps |
| Rear cab roof | A pair of work lights, fixed or adjustable | Rear linkage, hitch, implement, trailer |
| Rear and fenders | Tail, brake, indicator and number plate lamps | Road legal rear lighting |
Lighting Packages
John Deere sells the 6R with different lighting packages, and the names and contents vary by market. In some markets the base tractor runs halogen road and work lamps, a Standard LED package adds LED lamps to the front roof and sides, and a Premium package adds the rear roof as well. Panorama roof tractors have their own package options. Irish package names and contents can differ, so treat this as a guide and confirm against the tractor’s build specification or your dealer’s records.
The practical point is that two 6R tractors of the same model and year can have a different mix of halogen and LED lamps. Look at the lamps on your tractor before you order: an LED lamp usually shows rows of small LED chips behind the lens, while a halogen lamp has a single bulb in a reflector.
Beacons
Beacon fitment on a 6R is typically 1 or 2 amber beacons on the cab roof, with a second beacon used where 1 cannot be seen from all round. Most use a DIN style socket or a bolt-on mount. In Ireland every tractor must be fitted with a flashing amber beacon and have it switched on whenever it is on a public road, so a working beacon is part of the 6R’s road kit, not an optional extra. Where possible it should sit on the roof on the centre line, with the lit surface at least 1.27 m from the ground.
Common Replacement Needs on a 6R
Most 6R lighting orders are for the same handful of jobs.
- Damaged cab roof work lamps. The roof lamps are the highest point on the tractor and take hits from low branches, hedge cutting, shed doors and loader work. Cracked lenses, snapped brackets and torn connectors are the usual result.
- Broken beacon mounts. A beacon on a fixed pole snaps off when it meets a branch or a low door. A flexi mount bends back instead and saves both the beacon and the socket.
- Side and handrail lamps knocked off. Lamps near the steps and handrails get caught by gates, implements and bale handlers.
- Condensation or water in a lamp. A cracked lens or perished seal lets water in. Once moisture is inside, LED drivers and halogen reflectors both fail early. Replace the lamp rather than drying it and hoping.
- Halogen bulbs blowing. On halogen spec tractors, road and work lamp bulbs are consumables. Vibration and long running hours are the usual causes.
When a roof lamp is damaged, check the bracket and the cable as well as the lamp. A new lamp on a bent bracket will be aimed wrongly, and a pulled cable can leave the connector pins loose or corroded.
LED Upgrade Paths for the 6R
There are 3 sensible ways to upgrade a halogen spec 6R.
1. Like-for-Like LED Replacement Lamps
John Deere lists LED replacements for the 6R bonnet high beam, low beam and corner lights, and for the front and rear roof work lamps, across all 3 parts eras (MY12 to 14, MY15 to 21 and MY22 on). These use the original mounting and plug into the existing harness. For road headlamps, a complete approved LED headlamp unit like these is the legal upgrade, not an LED bulb in a halogen headlamp; ordinary tractors used for farming do not need a periodic roadworthiness test, but road lamps still need to be approved. A 6R with a design speed over 40 km/h used for non-exempt work (local authority work, construction or quarrying, for example) counts as a fast tractor and needs a CVRT test and Certificate of Roadworthiness, where lighting faults count. Aftermarket LED work lamps with the same mounting pattern and connector do the same job, often for less money. Browse John Deere fit work lamps and John Deere headlights to compare options.
2. Universal LED Work Lights on Existing Brackets
If the original lamp shape is not essential, a universal LED work light can bolt to the roof bracket or a new bracket. Match the beam pattern to the job: wide flood for the rear roof and hitch area, a tighter beam for the front roof if you need distance. You will usually need to fit a matching connector or an adaptor lead. Our range of LED work lamps covers 12V flood, spot and combo patterns.
3. Adding Extra Lamps
Extra lamps on the handrails, mirror arms or loader need their own fused, relay switched circuit rather than a tap into an existing lamp feed. The 6R uses electronic control of many lighting functions, so splicing into the factory wiring can cause fault codes and makes warranty and dealer diagnosis harder. Run a separate circuit from a suitable power point.
EMC and GPS
Every current 6R can carry StarFire guidance, and the MY2027 tractors come with a StarFire 7500 receiver. Cheap LED lamps with poor electromagnetic compatibility can interfere with radio, GPS and guidance signals. Choose LED lamps that state EMC compliance (ECE R10 is the regulation to look for). The EMC compliant LED work light guide explains what to check.
How to Identify Your Exact 6R Model and Year
- Read the badge. 6155R style names are MY2021 or earlier. 6R 155 style names are MY2022 or later.
- Find the PIN plate. The product identification number (PIN) on the chassis plate identifies the exact tractor. A John Deere dealer or the John Deere parts catalogue can decode the model year and factory options from it.
- Check the roof. A clear panel in the roof above the windscreen means a Panorama roof. A solid roof is the Standard roof.
- Look at the lamp itself. Note the shape (oval or round), whether it is fixed or adjustable, halogen or LED, and the number of mounting bolts.
- Photograph the connector. Many modern tractor lamps use sealed multi-pin connectors such as Deutsch DT. A clear photo of the plug saves a wrong order. Our guide to tractor electrical connectors shows the common types.
Buying Tips for John Deere 6R Lights
- Buy by model year and roof type, not just model name. A 6R 155 and a 6155R are related tractors but different parts eras.
- Replace in pairs. Fit roof work lamps in pairs so the beam colour and output match left and right.
- Check the E-mark for road lamps. Headlamps, indicators and rear lamps used on the road should be type-approved with an E or e mark, as RSA guidance advises. Work lamps must be switched off before you go onto the public road.
- Match the voltage. The 6R is 12V. Many LED work lamps are rated 12V to 24V, which is fine.
- Look at the IP rating. Roof lamps on a tractor that gets pressure washed should be IP67 or better, ideally IP69K.
- Consider a flexi beacon mount. If you have already snapped one beacon pole, a flexi mount is cheap insurance. Browse tractor beacons or read our guide to beacon mounting options.

Frequently asked questions
What voltage are John Deere 6R lights?
All John Deere 6R tractors run a 12V electrical system. Replacement bulbs must be 12V. Most LED work lamps are rated for 12V to 24V and work correctly on a 6R.
Do 6R front roof work lights fit both roof types?
Not always. John Deere lists different front roof lamps for the Standard roof and the Panorama roof, with oval lamps on the Standard roof and round adjustable lamps on the Panorama roof. Check your roof type and the lamp shape before ordering.
Can I fit LED work lights to a halogen spec 6R?
Yes. Like-for-like LED lamps fit the original mounts and plug into the existing harness on all 6R model years. Universal LED lamps also fit with a suitable bracket and connector. Choose EMC compliant lamps if the tractor uses GPS guidance.
Why does my 6R beacon mount keep breaking?
A rigid beacon pole on the highest point of the cab takes the full force of any branch or door frame it meets. A flexi DIN mount bends on impact and springs back, which protects both the beacon and the roof socket.
How do I tell which model year my 6R is?
The badge gives the era: 6155R style names are MY2021 or earlier, 6R 155 style names are MY2022 or later. For the exact year and factory options, give the PIN from the chassis plate to a John Deere dealer.
