- Where to Buy Ford and Fordson Lights in Ireland
A Ford and Fordson tractor lighting system spans 8 decades of British and American tractor production, from the 1917 Fordson Model F through to the last Ford New Holland models of the mid 1990s. Early Fordsons had no lights as standard. Later Ford tractors carry halogen headlamps, cab work lamps, and a full road-legal rear cluster. The fitment, the bulb codes, and the replacement strategy differ across every era. Buying a lamp, a bulb, or a complete LED upgrade for any Ford or Fordson tractor starts with the build year, the model number, and the original specification. This guide covers Fordson E27N, Major, Power Major, Super Major, Dexta, Super Dexta, the 1000 series (2000, 3000, 4000, 5000), the 600 series, the 10 series (6610, 7610 and others), and the TW series, the bulb specifications for each era, and the LED retrofit options that fit classic and vintage Ford fitment.
How Ford and Fordson Tractor Lighting Evolved
Ford and Fordson tractor lighting evolved through 4 distinct eras. The Fordson era (1917 to 1964) used sidelight-only configurations on early tractors and 7-inch sealed-beam headlamps on the Major and Dexta. The blue and grey Ford era (1964 to 1975) covered the 1000 series and early 10 series with 5×7 inch sealed beams and basic rear bulb clusters. The blue Ford era (1975 to 1991) covered the 10 series Force, the 600 series, and the 7-10 series with H4 halogen headlamps. The Ford New Holland era (1991 to 1996) used H4 and H7 halogen on the TW and Powerstar ranges before the brand changed to New Holland.
The Dagenham factory in Essex built most Fordson tractors for the UK and Irish markets from 1933 to 1964. The Basildon factory in Essex took over from 1964 and produced Ford tractors until the New Holland merger. Closer to home, the Marina factory in Cork built the Fordson Model F from 1919 and the Model N until 1932, which is one reason so many Fordsons still turn up on Irish farms and at vintage rallies. The lighting fitment differs by factory and by market specification, which means a US-market Ford of the late 1950s carries different headlamp fitment from a UK-market Fordson Power Major.
The brand history matters for parts identification. A tractor badged as Fordson Major (1952 to 1958) shares its basic design with the Fordson Power Major (1958 to 1961) and Super Major (1961 to 1964), but lighting fitment changed between them. Always identify the exact model and year before ordering.
Identifying Your Ford or Fordson
A Ford or Fordson identifier appears on the side bonnet decal, the rear axle housing serial plate, and the dashboard. The model name, the serial number prefix, and the build year together determine lighting fitment.
| Era | Models | Years | Headlamp type | Rear cluster |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fordson F | Model F, Model N | 1917 to 1945 | Sidelight only (early), sealed beam (later) | Optional bulb cluster |

Reading a Ford Serial Number
A Ford or Fordson serial number sits on the engine block, the gearbox housing, or the rear axle. On many Ford models the serial and production codes identify the model and the build year. Model-specific serial charts from Ford tractor clubs and parts specialists cover full decoding.
Fordson vs Ford Identification
A Fordson badge appears on tractors built from 1917 to 1964. A Ford badge appears on tractors built from 1964 to 1991. A Ford New Holland badge appears from 1991 to 1996, after which the brand became New Holland. A tractor wearing both a Fordson decal and a Ford serial number is rebadged; the underlying chassis matches the serial number.
Fordson and Classic Ford Sealed Beam Headlamps
A Fordson Major, Power Major, Super Major, and Dexta carries 7-inch round sealed-beam headlamps mounted on the bonnet sides or in the front nosecone. The Dexta and Super Dexta use a smaller 5.75-inch sealed beam in the same mounting style. The sealed-beam unit is a single sealed glass assembly that contains the filament, the reflector, and the lens; replacement means swapping the entire unit.
7-Inch Sealed Beam Replacement
A 7-inch replacement headlamp for a Fordson Major or Power Major fits the original bracket, but check the connector and wiring on the tractor before ordering. Modern 7-inch LED units are much brighter and whiter than the original lamps. For road use, choose an LED headlamp unit that carries an E-mark for headlamp use. The visual change is significant on a vintage Fordson because the original lamp appears yellow-white and a modern LED appears cool-white.
5.75-Inch Sealed Beam Replacement
A 5.75-inch replacement for a Fordson Dexta or Super Dexta fits the smaller front aperture. Modern LED replacements give much more light than the original. For road use, choose an E-marked headlamp unit.
Halogen H4 Conversion for Sealed Beam
A halogen H4 conversion fits a 7-inch or 5.75-inch sealed-beam housing using an E-marked conversion lens kit. The H4 conversion accepts a standard automotive H4 60/55W halogen bulb. This is the budget upgrade path at approximately €35 per side, compared with roughly €90 to €175 per side for a full LED unit. The conversion suits owners who already have spare H4 bulb stock from other tractors or vehicles.
Ford 1000 Series and 10 Series Headlamps
A Ford 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6600, or 7600 carries 5×7 inch rectangular sealed-beam headlamps mounted in the bonnet face. The original specification is the H6054 high-low sealed beam pair, the same unit fitted to thousands of US-market trucks and tractors of the same era. Availability through agricultural and automotive parts channels is good.
H6054 Sealed Beam Replacement
A 5×7 rectangular H6054 sealed-beam replacement fits Ford 1000 series, 10 series, and early 7-10 series tractors. The original output is approximately 1,000 lumens on dipped beam and 1,300 lumens on main beam. A modern 5×7 LED sealed-beam replacement produces 3,000 to 4,500 lumens, fits the same bracket, and uses the same 3-pin H4 connector. The replacement is a 10-minute job: remove the chrome bezel ring (4 screws on early models, 4 spring clips on later models), withdraw the original unit, fit the LED unit, reattach the bezel.
Heritage Restoration Considerations
A heritage restoration of a Ford 4000 or 5000 may require keeping the original sealed-beam appearance for show or value reasons. NOS (new old stock) H6054 sealed-beam units are available from Ford collector specialists. For working classic tractors used in farm contracting, a 5×7 LED retrofit produces approximately 4 times the light output and is the practical choice.
Ford 7-10, 10 Series Force, and 600 Series H4 Headlamps
A Ford 7610, 7710, 8210, 6610, TW-5, TW-15, or TW-25 carries rectangular H4 halogen headlamps mounted in the bonnet face. The H4 60/55W dual-filament bulb is the standard automotive replacement available through any parts supplier.
H4 Bulb Replacement
A Ford H4 bulb replacement is a 5-minute job: open the bonnet, release the rear dust cap, release the wire retainer clip, withdraw the bulb without touching the glass envelope (skin oils shorten halogen lifespan), fit the replacement, refit the dust cap. The H4 60/55W bulb is rated at about 1,000 lumens on dipped beam and 1,650 lumens on main beam.
LED H4 Plug-In Retrofit
A Ford LED H4 plug-in bulb fits the original H4 socket and gives a whiter light, but most LED H4 bulbs are not approved for use in a halogen headlamp, so fitting them can make the headlamp non-compliant for road use. RSA guidance says LED bulbs are only legal if type-approved, fitted to a compatible vehicle, and the beam does not dazzle. For a TW-25 or 8210 used for night ploughing or harvest, the legal routes are a better halogen bulb or a complete E-marked LED headlamp unit, plus LED work lights for field use. See the halogen to LED upgrade guide for the wider context.
Ford and Fordson Rear Clusters
A Ford or Fordson rear cluster combines tail, brake, indicator, and reverse functions. The cluster type varies by era.
| Era | Rear cluster type | Bulb codes |
|---|---|---|
| Fordson Major / Dexta | Round bulb cluster (separate lamps) | P21W, R5W |
| Ford 1000 series | Round bulb cluster | P21W, R5W |
| Ford 10 series | Combined round cluster | P21/5W, P21W |
| Ford 7-10 series | Combined rectangular cluster | P21/5W, PY21W |
| Ford 600 series | Combined rectangular cluster | P21/5W, PY21W |
| Ford 30 series | Combined cluster (some LED option) | P21/5W or OEM LED |
| Ford TW Force | Combined rectangular cluster | P21/5W, PY21W |
Round Bulb Clusters on Vintage Ford
A vintage Ford or Fordson uses separate round lamp housings for tail, brake, and indicator functions. The bulb specification is P21W (21W single-filament) for indicator and brake, and R5W (5W single-filament) for the tail position. The lens is typically pressed glass or early plastic, with the rear lens secured by 2 chromed screws.
Rectangular Clusters on 10 Series and 600 Series
A Ford 7610, 6610, or TW-series rear cluster is a combined plastic housing with separate chambers for tail/brake (P21/5W), indicator (PY21W amber), and reverse (P21W). The lens is screwed in place with 3 to 4 cross-head screws. The bulb-holder is removable from the rear of the housing.
LED Replacement for Ford Rear Clusters
An LED replacement for a Ford rear cluster is available in 2 routes: full LED cluster swap or LED bulb retrofit. A full E-marked LED cluster is brighter, sealed against water ingress (IP67 or better), and lasts far longer than filament bulbs. An LED bulb retrofit fits the existing housing, but LED indicator bulbs change the flash rate on an original flasher unit (see below). See LED rear lamp clusters for the upgrade detail.
Indicator Fitment and Hyperflash Fix
A Fordson Major or early Ford has no factory indicators because the original specification predates modern indicator rules. In Ireland, tractors manufactured or first registered before 1 January 1980 (or more than 30 years old, according to current RSA guidance) are exempt from the full lighting system if used only in daylight, so check with the RSA if precision matters. Any lights that are fitted must work, and indicators are a big safety gain on any tractor that goes on the road. A retrofit indicator kit for a vintage Fordson uses an amber indicator lamp on each side, front and rear, wired through a flasher unit and a dashboard switch.
A Ford 600 series, 10 series, or later model carries factory amber indicators using PY21W bulbs. Converting to LED PY21W replacements upsets the flash rate because the LED draws too little current: an original thermal flasher flashes slowly or not at all, and an electronic load-sensing flasher flashes fast (hyperflash). The fix is an LED-compatible flasher unit, a CAN-bus compatible LED bulb with built-in load resistor, or a load resistor wired in parallel with each indicator bulb. See flasher lamps and indicators for the wiring detail.
Beacons and Warning Lights on Ford Tractors
A Ford or Fordson tractor beacon mount is rare on factory-built tractors before 1980, but in Ireland every tractor on a public road must show a flashing amber beacon. The only exception is a vintage tractor used solely for rallies or display. A Ford 600 series or TW series may carry a factory DIN socket on the cab roof for a flashing amber beacon. A Fordson Major or Ford 5000 typically has no beacon mount; a retrofit DIN pole through the cab roof or the ROPS bar is the standard solution.
A halogen rotating beacon (Hella KL Junior style) was common on Ford 7610 and 7710 tractors used in contracting on both sides of the Irish Sea. Modern LED beacon replacements fit the same DIN socket, run cooler, draw 1 to 2 amps instead of 4 to 5 amps for halogen, and last 30,000 hours instead of 1,000 hours. For a heritage Ford or Fordson without a fitted DIN socket, a magnetic beacon provides removable warning lighting without permanent fittings.
Vintage Ford and Fordson Restoration Lighting
A vintage Ford or Fordson restoration covers 3 lighting approaches: full original specification, period-correct halogen upgrade, and modern LED upgrade. The choice depends on the use case.
A full original specification keeps the sealed-beam headlamps, the period-correct bulbs, and the original wiring. This suits show tractors and concours restorations where authenticity is the priority. Sourcing NOS sealed beams and period correct bulbs requires specialist suppliers.
A period-correct halogen upgrade replaces sealed beams with H4 conversion lenses and fits modern H4 60/55W bulbs. The tractor retains a near-original appearance but produces 50% more light output. This suits working classic tractors used at shows, ploughing matches, and light farm work.
A modern LED upgrade replaces sealed beams with LED retrofit units and converts indicators and rear clusters to LED. The tractor produces 3 to 4 times the original light output, draws less current, and lasts longer between bulb replacements. This suits working classic tractors used for genuine farm work or contracting where visibility matters more than period appearance.
